For EPHJ 2025, Générale Ressorts – a member of the Acrotec Group – unveils a major innovation that transforms a discreet mechanical component into a novel aesthetic and functional medium: the engraved barrel spring. Thanks to high-precision laser surface treatment technology, it is now possible to decorate the edge of the spring without altering its mechanical properties.
A first in the watchmaking industry
Until now, the barrel spring, coiled inside the drum, was invisible and of no visual interest. Thanks to this patented process, this essential part can now become a design or traceability element visible through the movement’s skeletonized openings or transparent components.
An evolving decoration at the heart of the watch
This engraving not only allows you to add a logo, text or motif, but also to create an evolving visual effect as the spring tightens or relaxes, with a dynamic morphological rendering that brings movement to life. 3D effects, variations in texture, color or brilliance can be obtained by modulating the size of the laser spot and the intensity of the pulses.
From customization to safety
In addition to its aesthetic advantages, this process opens up new perspectives in watchmaking personalization (name, date, unique message) and in the fight against counterfeiting. It also makes it possible to directly integrate a power reserve indication, either visibly or technically engraved, depending on whether the barrel is open or closed.
Industrialized and protected technology
Already in development for several Swiss watch brands, this innovation has been patented by the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property. Générale Ressorts is the first company in the world to master this technology of decorative and functional engraving on barrel springs, guaranteeing its industrial reproducibility as of now.
